The area around Lalinde, called the Lindois, is located to the
east of Bergerac.
|
|
It has been inhabited by man since paleolithic times.
Little by little there has built up here a large heritage,
and innumerable small rural buildings are testimony to
its varied architecture : huts, crosses, springs, wash-places,
dovecotes…they are there to be discovered on country
walks. In more modern times the region has been enriched
by the arrival of castles without moats but with large
carved windows and by elegant chartreuses, waiting to
be discovered on expeditions between the Dordogne and
Louyre rivers.
The Dordogne river has created an important feature of
the countryside, carving out a vast alluvial valley running
from east to west and overlooked by raised plateaus. A
few precious remains attest to past human activities.
The most numerous tell the story of the mills but also
of more recent work, notably the Lalinde Canal.
Itineraries to help explore this heritage, a still-present
past, are available in the local Tourist Offices.
